Ian Metcalfe

It is with much sadness that after a long illness with PSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy), Ian Metcalfe passed away on December 18th. He was the developer of this blog site, and his enthusiasm for family history was infectious. Without his dedicated research and incredible ability to absorb knowledge, this site would never have been developed. He is greatly missed, and much sympathy is extended to Dawn, his wife, and James and Megan his children.

  1. I am so very sorry to hear of Ian’s passing. It was such a thrill when he first got in touch with me about my Keir ancestry. I was so delighted to learn more about my Keir connections. My ancestress Elizabeth Henrietta Keir was the daughter of Alexander Keir and Rebecca Smith who lived at Brodsworth. She married William Hett in 1790. The name Keir has been used in our family as a forename ever since! I am sure Ian will be greatly missed. Although we only met through email, he came across so friendly, helpful and, of course, enthusiastic about family history! My sympathy and condolences to Dawn, James and Megan. Julia Hett

    1. Thank you Julia, I’ll make sure Ian’s family see your comment.

I remember your connection, I’m (Anne) descended from John Keir who I believe was related to Alexander. Do you have a tree on Ancestry?

      1. Hello Anne. Thank you for getting in touch. I don’t have a tree on Ancestry. Perhaps I should! I have always been rather private but I now realise the advantages of sharing with other people! I used to use the program “Family Tree” which I think is connected to Ancestry? I will look into that to see if I can post the tree and give you access. I will let you know if I am successful! Julia.
